UCU BU is dedicated to protecting your rights, and fighting for fairness and transparency in the workplace.
We perform a multitude of roles, from supporting you in individual negotiations, to leading collective disputes for groups of employees. UCU is recognised by higher and further education employers for the purposes of negotiating salaries, pay structures and conditions of employment.

Casework
UCU BU Casework varies across a variety of issues, but involves supporting colleagues in matters of promotion, discrimination, bullying, WLP, disciplinary and the working environment. UCU BU can help you in a number of ways, from providing advice during an informal chat, to supporting you in raising appeals and grievances.

Health & Safety
UCU BU strives to ensure that BU maintains its responsibility for the health, welfare and safety of staff. UCU BU works closely with UET to control workloads and tackle performance management strategies, and has been active in calling on BU to provide staff with a safe and secure working environment during the Covid-19 crisis.

Equality
UCU BU Equality actively engages with annual events such as Black History Month and LGBT History Month, as well as local action related to parental leave, sexual harassment, racial discrimination and disability. UCU Equality contributes to the BU Equality & Diversity Committee, and supports members with equality-related problems.

Travel
UCU BU Travel engage with the BU Travel Plan Group and have consulted on the new BU Travel Plan. UCU BU represents members over a range of issues, most notably over parking permit entitlement, parking enforcement, and the incorrect issue of parking tickets (an all too frequent occurrence).

Pensions
UCU BU are not financial advisors, but we are able to draw upon the National Pensions Officers for all the schemes. We keep an eye on the institution’s pension management in order to support our members, and can call upon, as necessary, Pensions Regulatory bodies and invoke legal remedies, if and when local negotiations fail.

Environment
UCU is committed to playing its part in ‘greening the campus’ and ‘greening the curriculum’ and to assist campaigns for sustainable national policies and local practices. UCU BU Environment works to raise awareness of green issues in the workplace through consulting with BU on their sustainability agendas, and working with local environmental groups.
