June 2025 Industrial Action

Bournemouth University is a place of learning and a living part of the future of this region. It is home to internationally-recognised experts who have published research in a number of different fields, from media production to medical science to mechanical engineering.

Every year, we train the teachers in your schools, the nurses and midwives in your hospitals, the scientists running your blood tests, the engineers, the lawmakers, the journalists, the analysts, the creative media professionals, the writers, and so many others. We help students develop valuable skills, to think creatively and critically, to stretch their minds and imaginations. We support students who go on to protect your environment, care for your families, and give back to this community in a hundred ways.

Right now, those of us who teach, guide, and support them—are under threat.

216 university staff face losing their jobs through a rushed restructure that lacks transparency, consultation, or proper planning.

This means fewer professionals entering vital services. Fewer students getting the support they need. Fewer opportunities for local people to study, grow, and stay to enrich the culture and community.

This strike is about defending everything this university contributes to the life and future of this region.

We are standing up for our colleagues, our students, and for the community they go on to serve.

Why Are UCU Members Taking Strike Action at Bournemouth University?

Staff at Bournemouth University are taking strike action because we believe the direction the university is being pushed in is wrong—both for staff and for students.

We are facing a large-scale restructure that puts 216 jobs at risk. These decisions are happening hastily, without proper consultation, and without input from the people who teach, research, and support students every day.

How will this affect the quality of education

Fewer staff means less time for students, fewer choices, and more pressure on the people who remain. We know that when staff are overwhelmed and exploited, student support and teaching both suffer.
